Insurance Claims Adjusters

Wednesday, December 02, 2009 0 Comments

Claims adjusters consider it a standard part of the job to counteract fraudulent or exaggerated claims. They are trained to look for fraudulent documentation such as photos or video of items that were not actually property of the homeowner making the claim.
The best way to ensure that you get through the claims process quickly and without issue, is to have a detailed inventory report along with sales receipts which prove value and ownership. With the proper documentation and proof, your claim will not be challenged and will be processed quickly.

Be Prepared - Know Your Insurance Coverage Limits

Thursday, November 05, 2009 0 Comments

Each insurance policy has a section that refers to the "limitations" (limited coverage) of specific items such as artwork, jewelry, furs, firearms, gold, silver, etc. It is important to know what the limits are for these items - especially if you collect or have inherited these items. You can increase the coverage of these items by purchasing special coverage which adds the specific items to your policy and insures them for the full value.
If loss or damage were to occur and you try to file a claim covering the full value - the claim will be rejected and you will only receive the "limited" amount stated within your policy.

Protect Your Power Tools and Equipment

We recently had a need to replace the air compressor we have had for many years. We went to Home Depot to check out their line of air compressors and did find one that would work for us. But is was a much larger and more expensive one than we currently had.
Such purchases are important to add to your home inventory list because without proof of purchase (receipt) and details such as purchase price, model number and serial number - you would not be reimbursed for the upgrade but for a standard model.

It is very beneficial to document all the remodeling projects that you do to your home. 1) Remodeling typically increases the value of your home and as a result, you may need to update the value of your homeowners policy. An inventory provides the details that provides the proof of the added value to your home. 2) Assists with getting an accurate appraisal of your home. 3) If you are selling your home, you can reference the inventory report to show potential buyers what improvements you have made to your home.

Do You Know What Is In Your Homeowners Insurance Policy?

Thursday, October 01, 2009 0 Comments

Be prepared if the unfortunate occurs to your home, by knowing if you have Replacement Cost coverage or Actual Cash Value coverage.
Replacement Cost means you will be covered for the cost of replacing or repairing your home or possessions up to your coverage limits. There is no depreciation involved with Replacement Cost. Actual Cash Value is Replacement Cost minus depreciation. If you have Actual Cash Value, you will get very little from the insurance claim because of the deduction for depreciation based on the age and condition of what was lost or damaged.
It is your choice to make - take the time to review your policy and know what is stated in your policy - before something happens.
To further protect you and your home - make sure you have a Home Inventory completed. For further information on a Home Inventory, visit www.jlksystems.com

Filing An Insurance Claim

Monday, September 28, 2009 0 Comments

When one is making a claim on destroyed, damaged, or stolen personal property, along with the detailed list of what is included in the claim, sales receipts are invaluable and often the first evidence an adjuster will request.
If you haven't kept any receipts, for your major purchases, take the time to secure the next best alternative to a receipt - a cancelled check, credit card statement, or return to the place of purchase and request a duplicate copy of the sales receipt.

Business Continuity Plan

Tuesday, September 15, 2009 0 Comments

If some type of disruption occurred to your business, whether it be a power outage, fire or flood, would you know how to continue business until recovery is accomplished? If you currently do not have a plan to follow, it is crucial to your company's future to invest the time in developing a Business Continuity Plan (BCP). A BCP will improve the chances of continuing operations during or after a minor or major disaster. In fact, businesses that recover quickly are those that have planned in advance. A BCP is the answer to the unexpected business interruption.
A key component of the BCP is an inventory of business assets. This would include such information as description, model, serial number, purchase or lease date, and manufacturer. Photos and video of these assets would also be taken.
Other key components of the BCP include: document internal key personnel and backups, identify who can telecommute, document external contacts, identify critical documents and identify your contingency location.
Start planning today - to ensure your company will survive and recover.

Estate Planning

Sunday, September 06, 2009 0 Comments

A home inventory is a great asset to estate planning. While it provides key information such as who gets what, the value, etc. - it provides background information that can be easily forgotten such as how long it has been in the family, the age, special memories, etc.
When my Aunt Cathryn past away, I sure wish she had completed a home inventory list. I know many of the items in her estate had been in the family for quite a while but now that the family had gotten smaller, no one had that information. I remember her talking specifically about items and how long she had the item or from who she received the item - but I could not recall the specifics. Knowing if an item had been part of the family for many years - does make a difference if you get rid of that item. As a result, it was very difficult to decide what items to keep and what not to keep.
Once a home inventory is completed - the information can be easily incorporated into the estate planning document. For further information, please visist www.jlksystems.com.

Prepare A Home Inventory

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 0 Comments

While it is important to protect your home with a homeowners insurance policy, you can't rely entirely on this if something unfortunate (i.e. fire, flood, theft, etc.) were to occur. Each claim needs to be accompanied with a detailed list of what was stolen or destroyed - which will prove ownership and value to the claims adjuster. If you haven't prepared this list prior to the disaster - you will need to create the list while you are under stress and trying to deal emotionally with what just occurred as well as what steps you should take to put your life back together.
We can create a detailed portfolio for you so that all your assets are identified and documented. Because we help protect your personal assets, you have better protection and can ensure your family's financial stability.

How To Insure Your Personal Possessions?

Thursday, August 20, 2009 0 Comments

Many homeowners are unaware that there are two options provided to them - as to how your personal possessions will be replaced due to damage or theft. Your insurance policy will state either Actual Cash Value or Replacement Cost. Actual Cash Value is the amount it would take to replace or repair your assets, minus depreciation. The settlement you would receive from the insurance company would be for a certain percentage of the original value, as depreciation (age and wear) has been taken into account. Replacement Cost is the amount it would cost to replace your assets with items of similar type and quality - without deducting for depreciation. While it may cost more to have Replacement Cost as part of your insurance policy, it is to your benefit if you ever have to replace your possessions.
For either options, before you receive any settlement - you need to prove ownership and value. The only way this can be done is with an inventory list - complete with descriptions, receipts and photos. Please visit our website for further information. www.jlksystems.com.

Home Destruction-Are You Prepared

Monday, August 10, 2009 0 Comments

Last week, several neighbors and I were discussing our unusual summer weather - one that has brought cooler temperatures, very little precipitation and no storms. Needless to say, that is the wrong discussion to have because only a few days later a "substantial twister" with winds of 75-112 miles per hour hit our area. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or deaths but there was a significant amount of damage to homes and businesses. Reading the reports of damage and the comments by the homeowners who experienced damage, I hope they are prepared so that when the claims adjuster shows up they can immediately provide the itemized list of items that were damaged or destroyed. Documentation is a significant factor in determining the reimbursement from an insurance claim. Photos and a detailed inventory list including scanned receipts validates your proof of ownership and value - which is key in receiving a settlement covering the full extent of the loss - in a timely manner.
Let us help you be prepared and protected.
